Try Before You Buy – Why You Should Pay For A Pour Before Heading To The Liquor Store

I walked into my local liquor store yesterday and I was greeted with 3 new bottles of bourbon that I haven’t had a chance to buy yet: Sazerac Rye, Heaven Hill (Bottled in Bond), and Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel.

A typical bourbon lover would have gone a little giddy seeing some of these bottles sitting on the shelf.

I was a little excited, but I was just buying a bottle for a gift and I had to get to my dinner plans.

So I ended up picking based upon a weird factor:

I picked the bottle that tasted the best to me when I did a blind taste test.

I have never consumed Sazerac Rye, so that was a pass (and I’m just not a rye guy). I have had Heaven Hill and Elijah Craig before, so I needed way to decide.

I had received a sample of the Heaven Hill BIB and I really enjoyed it, so I decided to grab that bottle.

It made me think a bit. Maybe there was something to this crazy madness. Maybe people should be spending more money on tasting bourbons before actually buying a bottle.

Why You Should Try A Bourbon At A Restaurant Or Bar First

Trying bourbon at a restaurant or bar before purchasing a bottle can be beneficial for several reasons:

  1. Exploration of flavors: Bourbon comes in various styles and flavor profiles, influenced by factors like the mash bill, aging process, and barrel type. Tasting different bourbons at a bar or restaurant allows you to explore a range of flavors and determine what appeals to your palate. It helps you understand your preferences, such as whether you enjoy sweeter, spicier, or more robust bourbons.
  2. Cost-effective sampling: Bourbon can be quite expensive, especially for high-quality or rare bottles. By trying different bourbons at a bar or restaurant, you can sample a variety without committing to an entire bottle. This way, you can avoid potential disappointment if a particular bourbon doesn’t align with your taste preferences.
  3. Expert recommendations: Bartenders and staff at reputable bars or restaurants often possess extensive knowledge about bourbon. They can provide guidance, suggest specific brands or expressions based on your preferences, and offer insights into the characteristics of different bourbons. Their expertise can enhance your bourbon-drinking experience and help you make informed purchasing decisions.
  4. Comparing and contrasting: Tasting bourbons side by side allows you to compare and contrast their flavors, aromas, and overall quality. At a bar or restaurant, you may have the opportunity to try different bourbons simultaneously or in quick succession. This comparative approach helps you develop a better understanding of the nuances and complexities within the bourbon category.
  5. Social experience: Enjoying bourbon at a restaurant or bar provides a social setting where you can discuss and share your impressions with friends or fellow bourbon enthusiasts. It can be an enjoyable and interactive experience to exchange opinions, try recommendations from others, and broaden your knowledge of bourbon through conversations.
  6. Discovering new releases: Bars and restaurants often have access to limited-edition or special release bourbons that may not be readily available in stores. By trying these unique offerings, you can stay up to date with the latest releases and discover hidden gems that you might not have encountered otherwise.

Conclusion

Overall, sampling bourbon at a restaurant or bar before purchasing a bottle can be a wise approach to refine your preferences, save money, gain insights from experts, and have an enjoyable and educational experience.

Some people want to dive into a bottle with little to no hesitation, but I think the smarter people take an educated gamble and try a sample before purchasing. If you can find a liquor store that has a tasting booth, I highly recommend making that your go-to liquor store!

Cheers!

A New Twist on the Classic Bourbon Highball

Welcome, cocktail enthusiasts and adventurous spirits! Today, we embark on a flavorful journey that takes the beloved Bourbon highball to new and exciting heights. If you’re a fan of the timeless combination of Bourbon whiskey and a sparkling mixer, get ready to embrace a delightful twist that will awaken your taste buds and leave you craving more.

Ok – That was a fun attempt at making fun of bloggers (myself included). This is a simple article about a slight twist I’m putting on my highball cocktails this summer. I promise it’s not earth shattering, but it is tasty.

The Classic Recipe

Here’s a recipe for a classic Bourbon highball:

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces (60 ml) Bourbon whiskey
  • 4-6 ounces (120-180 ml) soda water or ginger ale
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: Lemon or lime wedge for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
  2. Pour the Bourbon whiskey over the ice.
  3. Slowly pour in the soda water or ginger ale, leaving some space at the top of the glass.
  4. Gently stir the ingredients with a long spoon to mix them together.
  5. If desired, squeeze a lemon or lime wedge over the drink and drop it into the glass as a garnish.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy your refreshing Bourbon highball!

My Twist On The Bourbon Highball

It’s my special ingredient.

I’m a huge fan of flavor that isn’t sweet, so I naturally thought a La Croix (or similar flavored water) would make a nice cocktail. My wife mixes it with vodka all the time, so it seemed logical to substitute it into a highball cocktail with some of my favorite bourbon.

So what’s my recipe?

It’s simple:

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces (or so) of decent bourbon (I recommend Old Forester 100 or Old Grand Dad 114)
  • 1/2 of a can of La Croix (or other flavored water) – My personal favorites are Lemon and Berry
  • Ice from my Opal ice machine

I follow the same instructions from above, but I make sure to serve it in my Yeti glass.

Conclusion

As you can tell, I’m pretty much a high-end mixologist.

Joking aside, this is a pretty tasty, yet simple, cocktail that helps put another way to enjoy your favorite bourbon.

I suggest this for a drink at the golf course or while you are mowing.

However you enjoy it, enjoy it responsibly!

Becoming a Tennessee Squire: A Distinctive Honor for Jack Daniel’s Aficionado

NOTE: This article is based upon internet research – I am not a member of the Tennessee Squire Association. The information could be incorrect and I’ll update it as I find out different information.

I got home this evening from a date with my wife and I saw something on Facebook that was a bit confusing and new. I saw this come up:

The actual post (which I can’t find now) was someone sharing their land deed from the program.

I’m not a huge Jack Daniels fan, but it caught my attention, so I decided to do a deep dive into the world of the Tennessee Squire Association and figure out what the heck it was and how to become a member.

The Essence of Being a Tennessee Squire

A Tennessee Squire is an honorary designation granted to individuals who are fervent supporters and advocates of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. The Tennessee Squire Association, created by the Jack Daniel Distillery, serves as a platform to recognize and honor those who embody the spirit of the brand. Holding the title of Tennessee Squire is considered a mark of distinction and a testament to one’s genuine passion for this iconic American whiskey.

To me – It sounds like a really cool marketing plan (as a marketing professor, I am a fan), so I like how they are setting their brand ambassadors aside and giving them special perks. It reminds me a bit of the Makers Mark Ambassador program (which is amazing).

How to Become a Tennessee Squire

This is where my research went a little awry. Usually these type of marketing programs have a lot of promotion and hoopla around it. Instead – I was met with this screen:

I don’t have a plot number and I tried clicking on the link for more information. All I was given was the contact form for the Jack Daniel’s contact form.

So with a little more digging, I found out this is an invite only program. And even crazier, you can only be invited by a current member. Since I have never met a member, I guess I don’t have a strong chance of getting in.

It seems very exclusive.

If you are a member, let me know so I can get a little more insight. Most of my research was from forums and old posts, so it’s as accurate as I could find.

The Benefits of Being a Tennessee Squire

Being a Tennessee Squire goes beyond a simple title. It comes with a range of benefits that further enrich your connection to Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.

Some advantages of being a Tennessee Squire include:

  1. Exclusive Events: Gain access to special events, such as distillery tours, tastings, and gatherings designed specifically for Tennessee Squires. These occasions offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of Jack Daniel’s and connect with fellow enthusiasts.
  2. Limited-Edition Releases: Receive early access to limited-edition releases and rare expressions from the Jack Daniel’s distillery. These coveted bottles often have distinct characteristics or unique stories behind them, making them highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.
  3. Insider Information: Stay informed through the quarterly Tennessee Squire Association newsletter, which provides updates on upcoming releases, behind-the-scenes insights, and fascinating stories from the world of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.

What Is A Tennessee Squire Deed?

A Tennessee Squire deed, also known as a “Land in Lynchburg, Tennessee” deed, is a unique and symbolic document presented to individuals who become Tennessee Squires. It serves as a physical representation of their honorary title and affiliation with the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Squire Association.

The Tennessee Squire deed holds sentimental value and is often cherished by those who receive it. It is typically a decorative certificate that includes personalized details such as the individual’s name, a unique identification number, and the official Tennessee Squire Association logo. The deed may also feature artwork or imagery associated with Jack Daniel’s and Lynchburg, Tennessee.

While the Tennessee Squire deed does not grant any legal ownership or rights to land in Lynchburg, it carries significant meaning within the context of the Tennessee Squire community. It symbolizes a connection to the heritage and legacy of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and represents the individual’s commitment to supporting and promoting the brand.

Tennessee Squires often proudly display their deeds, either framed or kept in a special place, as a tangible reminder of their involvement and dedication to the Jack Daniel’s family. It serves as a conversation starter and a point of pride among whiskey enthusiasts.

It’s important to note that the Tennessee Squire deed is a commemorative item and should not be confused with an actual land deed or legal document. Its purpose is to honor and celebrate the individual’s association with the Tennessee Squire Association and their appreciation for Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.

A Look Behind The Login Page

If you know me, I always do my full research and end up finding more information than most people can ever imagine.

I’m going to share some screenshots from “behind the curtain” of the Tennessee Squire club.

As you can tell, it’s really a fancy (and well done) marketing ploy for Jack Daniels brand ambassadors. And I can’t be mad. I don’t even drink Jack Daniels and I wanted to be a part of the club. So kudos to Jack for thinking of this idea.

Conclusion

Becoming a Tennessee Squire is an honorable distinction that highlights your genuine appreciation for Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. By joining the Tennessee Squire Association, you become part of a community of like-minded individuals who share your passion for this iconic spirit. With exclusive benefits, access to special events, and the opportunity to discover limited-edition releases, being a Tennessee Squire allows you to deepen connection to the wonderful world of Jack Daniels spirits.

Do Bourbon And Root Beer Go Together?

Yes, bourbon and root beer can be combined to create a tasty and refreshing beverage. The combination of bourbon’s rich and complex flavors with the sweet, herbal, and bubbly characteristics of root beer can make for an interesting and enjoyable drink. This cocktail is commonly referred to as a “Root Beer Bourbon Float” or a “Bourbon and Root Beer.”

Where Did The Mixing Of Bourbon and Root Beer Originate?

The exact origins of the root beer and bourbon cocktail are unclear, as the combination likely evolved through experimentation and personal preference. However, the concept of mixing spirits with non-alcoholic beverages is not uncommon in the world of cocktails.

The root beer and bourbon combination likely emerged due to the complementary flavors and the desire to create a unique and enjoyable beverage. Root beer, with its distinct herbal and sweet taste, pairs well with the rich, caramel, and sometimes spicy characteristics of bourbon. The carbonation in root beer adds a refreshing effervescence to the cocktail, enhancing the overall drinking experience.

Cocktail enthusiasts and bartenders have long been experimenting with different spirits and mixers to create interesting and innovative flavor combinations. The popularity of bourbon as a base spirit and the widespread availability of root beer likely contributed to the emergence of this particular cocktail. It has gained popularity as a fun and flavorful way to enjoy bourbon in a refreshing and approachable manner.

The Bourbon and Root Beer Cocktail

To make a Bourbon and Root Beer:

  1. Choose your bourbon: Select a bourbon that you enjoy and feel would complement the flavors of the root beer. You can experiment with different types of bourbon, whether it’s a smoother, sweeter variety or a spicier, more robust one.
  2. Gather your ingredients: You’ll need bourbon, root beer (regular or a specific brand of your choice), ice cubes, and optionally, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream as a garnish.
  3. Mix the drink: Fill a glass with ice cubes. Pour a shot or two of bourbon over the ice. Top it off with chilled root beer, leaving some room at the top of the glass for garnishes.
  4. Optional garnish: For an extra treat, you can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top. This addition creates a float-like experience and adds a creamy texture to the drink.
  5. Stir and enjoy: Give the drink a gentle stir to combine the flavors. Sip and savor the unique blend of bourbon and root beer. The sweetness of the root beer complements the bourbon’s depth, creating a delightful balance of flavors.

Remember to adjust the proportions according to your taste preferences. Some people prefer a stronger bourbon presence, while others may enjoy a milder combination with more root beer. As always, please drink responsibly and be aware of your alcohol consumption.

What Is Root Beer Made Of?

Root beer is a carbonated soft drink that has a distinct flavor reminiscent of herbs and spices. It is typically made from a combination of ingredients including roots, barks, and spices. While there are variations in recipes and brands, here are some common components found in root beer production:

  1. Sassafras: Traditionally, sassafras root was a key ingredient in root beer, providing a distinct and earthy flavor. However, it contains safrole, a compound that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has deemed as potentially carcinogenic, so commercial root beers now typically use artificial sassafras flavoring instead.
  2. Wintergreen: Wintergreen leaves contribute a minty flavor to root beer. It is often used as a substitute for sassafras in modern recipes.
  3. Licorice: The root of the licorice plant adds a sweet and slightly herbal taste to root beer. It enhances the overall flavor profile and can provide a subtle hint of anise-like notes.
  4. Vanilla: Vanilla extract or vanilla bean is commonly used to add a creamy and smooth flavor to root beer. It helps round out the taste and provides a pleasant aroma.
  5. Sarsaparilla: Sarsaparilla root, derived from a vine-like plant, is often included in root beer recipes. It contributes a distinct flavor with hints of vanilla and caramel.
  6. Anise: Anise seeds or oil can be used to add a touch of licorice-like flavor and a slightly sweet aroma.
  7. Cinnamon, Clove, and Nutmeg: These spices are often added to enhance the complexity of root beer’s flavor profile, adding warmth and depth.
  8. Carbonated Water: Root beer is carbonated, giving it a bubbly and effervescent texture. Carbonation is typically achieved by adding carbonated water during the bottling or kegging process.
  9. Sweeteners: Root beer can be sweetened using a variety of sweeteners such as cane sugar, corn syrup, or artificial sweeteners. The choice of sweetener varies among brands and recipes.

What Root Beer Works The Best With Bourbon?

  1. A&W: A&W is a widely recognized brand known for its creamy and smooth root beer. It has a rich flavor with hints of vanilla and a classic root beer taste.
  2. Barq’s: Barq’s root beer is known for its bold and distinctive flavor. It has a slightly more pronounced bite and a crisp finish compared to other root beers.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the combination of bourbon and root beer offers a delightful and unique drinking experience. The robust flavors of bourbon and the herbal, sweet, and carbonated characteristics of root beer complement each other, creating a harmonious balance of tastes.

Root beer provides a flavorful backdrop for bourbon, allowing the whiskey’s complex notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice to shine through. The carbonation adds a refreshing effervescence, while the herbal and spiced elements of root beer enhance the depth of the bourbon’s flavor profile.

Whether you’re sipping a Root Beer Bourbon Float on a warm summer evening or enjoying a classic cocktail with a twist, the combination of bourbon and root beer invites you to explore a new realm of flavor. Fighting Cock Bourbon has a storied history that spans over four decades. Crafted by the experts at Heaven Hill Distillery, located in Bardstown, Kentucky, this brand quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of American whiskey. Its name, accompanied by the iconic rooster on the label, embodies the spirit of strength and resilience that lies within every bottle.

What sets Fighting Cock Bourbon apart is its remarkably high proof. Bottled at a formidable 103 proof (51.5% alcohol by volume), this bourbon is not for the faint of heart. The elevated alcohol content contributes to an intense and robust flavor profile that delivers a truly memorable tasting experience.

What Does Fighting Cock Bourbon Taste Like?

Fighting Cock Bourbon is known for its robust and intense flavor profile. Here are the major flavors commonly associated with Fighting Cock Bourbon:

  1. Rich Vanilla: Fighting Cock Bourbon often exhibits a prominent vanilla note. This flavor contributes to the bourbon’s sweetness and adds a smooth and creamy element to the overall taste experience.
  2. Caramel and Toffee: Caramel and toffee flavors are also prevalent in Fighting Cock Bourbon. These flavors provide a luscious and indulgent sweetness that balances the bourbon’s robustness.
  3. Charred Oak: As with many bourbons, Fighting Cock derives a significant amount of its flavor from the charred oak barrels in which it is aged. The charred oak imparts woody and smoky characteristics, adding depth and complexity to the bourbon’s taste profile.
  4. Warming Spices: Fighting Cock Bourbon delivers a dose of warming spices that contribute to its bold and fiery nature. You can expect notes of pepper, cinnamon, and cloves, which provide a pleasant spiciness that lingers on the palate.
  5. Fiery Finish: One of the signature features of Fighting Cock Bourbon is its high proof, which contributes to a robust and warming finish. The higher alcohol content intensifies the flavors and adds a distinctive kick, leaving a lasting impression.

Its high proof ensures that it will not be overshadowed by other ingredients, making it an excellent choice for those who crave a stronger and more pronounced whiskey presence in their cocktails.

How Should You Drink Fighting Cock Bourbon?

Water can reduce the alcohol’s intensity, allowing for a smoother and more nuanced tasting experience. Experiment with the amount of water to find the balance that suits your palate.

Is Bourbon Gluten-Free? Debunking the Myth

In short – Yes, bourbon is gluten-free as long as it doesn’t have any flavoring or contamination. This is confirmed by the Celiac Disease Foundation and the Gluten Intolerance Group.

If you want some more information about the why and the how related to gluten and bourbon, keep reading below!

One of the most common questions among individuals with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease is whether bourbon, a beloved American whiskey, is gluten-free. The gluten-free diet has gained significant attention in recent years, prompting people to scrutinize the gluten content of various foods and beverages. In this blog post, we’ll explore the truth behind the gluten content in bourbon and provide clarity on whether bourbon can be safely enjoyed by those following a gluten-free lifestyle.

Understanding Gluten

To address the gluten content in bourbon, it’s essential to understand what gluten is. Gluten is a mixture of proteins found in certain grains, including wheat, barley, and rye. These proteins are responsible for the elastic texture of dough and can cause adverse reactions in individuals with gluten-related disorders.

The Distillation Process

The key factor in determining whether bourbon is gluten-free lies in the distillation process. Distillation involves heating a liquid (in this case, fermented grain mash) and collecting the vapor that rises. The vapor is then condensed and collected as the distilled spirit.

Gluten Content in Bourbon

The distillation process is crucial because it effectively separates the alcohol from other compounds, including gluten proteins. Gluten molecules are too large and heavy to evaporate with the alcohol during distillation. As a result, the gluten proteins are left behind, and the distilled spirit is considered gluten-free.

Verification from Experts

According to leading celiac disease and gluten sensitivity organizations such as the Celiac Disease Foundation and the Gluten Intolerance Group, distilled spirits, including bourbon, are generally considered safe for individuals following a gluten-free diet. They assert that the distillation process removes gluten proteins, making the resulting spirits gluten-free.

Potential Contamination

While bourbon itself is gluten-free, there is a possibility of contamination during production. Some distilleries use grains that have been cross-contaminated with gluten-containing grains during harvesting, storage, or transportation. However, reputable distilleries have stringent quality control measures in place to minimize cross-contamination risks. It’s advisable for individuals with severe gluten sensitivities or celiac disease to research and choose distilleries that follow strict gluten-free protocols.

Flavored Bourbons and Additives

It’s important to note that flavored bourbons or those that incorporate additives may introduce gluten-containing ingredients into the final product. Certain flavorings, colorings, or additives used in bourbon production may contain gluten. Therefore, individuals with gluten sensitivities should exercise caution when consuming flavored or specialty bourbons and carefully read labels or contact the distillery for clarification.

Conclusion

In summary, bourbon that has undergone proper distillation is considered gluten-free. The distillation process effectively removes gluten proteins, making the resulting bourbon safe for individuals following a gluten-free lifestyle. However, there is a small risk of cross-contamination during production, and flavored bourbons may introduce gluten-containing ingredients. It’s always recommended for those with gluten sensitivities to research and choose reputable distilleries that follow strict gluten-free protocols. As always, consulting with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian knowledgeable

Discovering the Delights of Mellow Corn Bourbon

When it comes to American bourbon, Mellow Corn Bourbon stands out as a unique and intriguing spirit. While many associate bourbon with the use of predominantly corn in the mash bill, Mellow Corn takes it a step further, offering an authentic corn-forward experience. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of Mellow Corn Bourbon, exploring its production, flavor profile, and the reasons why it has garnered a dedicated following among whiskey enthusiasts.

The Distinctive Corn Bourbon

Mellow Corn Bourbon is a corn whiskey produced by Heaven Hill Distillery, a renowned name in American whiskey. As a straight corn bourbon, it must contain at least 81% corn in its mash bill, making it a standout among other bourbons. This high corn content contributes to its unique flavor profile and smoothness.

What Makes Mellow Corn Bourbon Different Than Other Bourbons?

Mellow Corn Bourbon sets itself apart from other bourbons through several key factors that contribute to its distinctiveness. Here are the primary elements that make Mellow Corn Bourbon different:

  1. High Corn Content: Mellow Corn Bourbon is classified as a corn whiskey, and it must contain at least 81% corn in its mash bill. This exceptionally high corn content is significantly more than the minimum requirement for traditional bourbons, which generally range from 51% to 79% corn. The high corn composition gives Mellow Corn Bourbon its unique flavor profile and sets it apart from other bourbons.
  2. Flavor Profile: The high corn content in Mellow Corn Bourbon contributes to its flavor profile. It imparts a distinct sweetness, rich corn character, and smoothness that is more pronounced compared to other bourbons. The flavors are often accompanied by notes of vanilla and caramel, creating a mellow and enjoyable sipping experience.
  3. Affordability: Mellow Corn Bourbon is known for its affordability. It provides bourbon enthusiasts with an opportunity to enjoy a unique and flavorful corn-forward bourbon without the premium price tag often associated with other limited-edition or high-end bourbons. Its affordability and quality make it an accessible choice for both seasoned bourbon drinkers and those exploring the world of bourbon.
  4. Mash Bill Composition: While most bourbons incorporate a combination of corn, rye, and malted barley in their mash bills, Mellow Corn Bourbon focuses primarily on corn. Though the exact proportions may vary, Mellow Corn Bourbon typically includes smaller amounts of malted barley and rye in its mash bill. This distinct mash bill composition contributes to the corn-centric character and sets it apart from bourbons with more varied grain combinations.
  5. Bottling Strength: Mellow Corn Bourbon is bottled at a robust 100 proof (50% alcohol by volume). This higher bottling strength gives it a bolder and more assertive presence, offering a different experience compared to lower-proof bourbons. It brings out the flavors and intensifies the overall profile of the whiskey.

Can Mellow Corn Bourbon Be Considered A Straight Bourbon?

No, Mellow Corn Bourbon cannot be considered a straight bourbon. While Mellow Corn is indeed a bourbon, it does not meet all the criteria to be labeled as a “straight” bourbon. According to the legal requirements set by the U.S. Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits, a straight bourbon must meet the following criteria:

  1. Mash Bill Composition: A straight bourbon must have a mash bill that contains at least 51% corn. While Mellow Corn Bourbon exceeds this requirement with its minimum of 81% corn content, it does not meet the specific criteria for straight bourbon in terms of the other grain components.
  2. Aging: Straight bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak barrels for a minimum of two years. However, Mellow Corn Bourbon is aged for an undisclosed period of time, meaning it may or may not meet the minimum aging requirement for straight bourbon.
  3. Bottling Strength: Straight bourbon must be bottled at no less than 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume). Mellow Corn Bourbon, on the other hand, is bottled at a higher proof of 100 (50% alcohol by volume).

Therefore, while Mellow Corn Bourbon is a bourbon that primarily consists of corn, it does not meet the specific criteria to be classified as a “straight” bourbon due to variations in mash bill composition and potential differences in aging. Nonetheless, Mellow Corn Bourbon still offers a unique and flavorful corn whiskey experience for bourbon enthusiasts to enjoy.

Can Mellow Corn Bourbon Be Used In Cooking Or Baking?

Yes, Mellow Corn Bourbon can certainly be used in cooking and baking to add unique flavors to your culinary creations. Its distinct corn-forward profile and smoothness can enhance a variety of dishes and desserts. Here are some ways you can incorporate Mellow Corn Bourbon into your cooking and baking:

  1. Sauces and Marinades: Add a splash of Mellow Corn Bourbon to your barbecue sauce, glazes, or marinades for meats like ribs, chicken, or pork. The bourbon’s sweetness and subtle spice can lend depth and complexity to the flavors.
  2. Desserts: Mellow Corn Bourbon can be a delightful addition to desserts. Use it in recipes for sauces, syrups, or glazes to drizzle over cakes, pies, or ice cream. It pairs well with flavors like caramel, chocolate, and vanilla.
  3. Baked Goods: Consider adding Mellow Corn Bourbon to your favorite baked goods recipes. It can infuse cookies, brownies, or bread pudding with a subtle whiskey note. Be mindful of the alcohol content, as some of it may evaporate during baking, but the flavors will remain.
  4. Whiskey-infused Creams or Custards: Incorporate Mellow Corn Bourbon into whipped creams, custards, or puddings for a boozy twist. It can elevate the flavors of classic desserts like crème brûlée or bread pudding.
  5. Savory Dishes: Explore using Mellow Corn Bourbon in savory recipes. It can add depth to sauces for dishes like bourbon-glazed salmon, bourbon-infused mushroom sauces, or bourbon-spiked gravy.

Remember to use Mellow Corn Bourbon in moderation and adjust quantities to your taste preferences and the specific recipe you’re following. Top Gifts For Bourbon Lovers and Drinkers

  1. Premium Bourbon Selection: This one is a no brainer, but still might be the hardest on the list for someone who doesn’t know bourbon. A standout gift for any bourbon lover is a bottle of premium bourbon. Choose a limited-edition release, a single barrel selection, or a highly regarded small-batch bourbon. Consider their preferences, such as their preferred flavor profile or distillery, to make the gift even more personalized.

If you don’t know what to grab, consider asking a local liquor store employee for some assistance. If there is a bourbon bar in town, it would also be a great spot to ask. Take the names of a few of the person’s favorite bottles and say: Could you give me something close to this, but better?
  2. Whiskey Glasses and Decanter Set: Elevate their sipping experience with a sophisticated whiskey glasses and decanter set. Look for glasses with a tulip shape or crystal-clear designs that enhance the aroma and presentation of bourbon. A matching decanter adds a touch of elegance to their home bar.

I always thought something was cool, but nothing something I would buy myself. I have seen people online who are using these decanters to blend their own version of infinity bourbon. It’s kind of a really cool idea.

Here’s one on Amazon that looks like a globe.
Here is a blog post about my pick for bourbon glasses (Yeti)
  3. Bourbon Barrel-Aged Coffee: For those who appreciate the fusion of flavors, consider gifting bourbon barrel-aged coffee. These specialty coffees are aged in used bourbon barrels, imparting unique and delicious bourbon notes to the beans. It’s a delightful way to start the day with the essence of bourbon-infused coffee.

Coopers Cask Coffee is the brand I have had in the past and it was pretty dang good. I used my french press and made myself some very delicious coffee (that didn’t actually have bourbon in it).
  4. Bourbon Tasting Set: Expand their palate and knowledge with a bourbon tasting set. These sets often feature small bottles or samples of various bourbon expressions, allowing them to explore different brands and flavor profiles. Some tasting sets also include tasting notes or a guide to enhance their tasting experience.

My wife got me a whiskey advent calendar a few years back and it was cool.

Instead of your traditional tasting set, I would recommend something like this: A Blind Tasting Kit with three different bottles of bourbon. The kit can be reused and it is actually something that is really interesting. Most bourbon lovers don’t do blind tastings and they learn a lot about their tastes and preferences when they do.
  5. Bourbon Barrel Smoking Chips: For barbecue and grilling enthusiasts, bourbon barrel smoking chips make an excellent gift. These chips are made from reclaimed bourbon barrels and add a distinctive smoky and bourbon-infused flavor to grilled meats, vegetables, and even cocktails.

The one’s I have used can be found here. They smell like a mix of bourbon and oak, but they smoke up mostly like oak. I would recommend this gift as a stocking stuffer only.
  6. Bourbon-Infused Gourmet Chocolates: Indulge their taste buds with bourbon-infused gourmet chocolates. Crafted using high-quality ingredients and infused with bourbon, these delectable treats offer a delightful combination of sweet and bourbon flavors. It’s a delicious way to satisfy their sweet tooth while paying homage to their favorite spirit.

Personally – I’m not a sweet fan, but I love these things. They are like my sweet indulgence and I rarely get them. So they make a perfect gift for someone as stingy as me.

Here are some that I love – Rebecca Ruth Bourbon Balls
  7. Bourbon Books and Magazines: Expand their bourbon knowledge with captivating books or subscriptions to bourbon-focused magazines. From whiskey history and cocktail recipes to in-depth distillery profiles and tasting guides, these resources offer a wealth of information and entertainment for bourbon enthusiasts.

I went to park my car at the airport and dropped my wife off at the terminal. By the time I got to our gate, she had purchased me a copy of Whiskey Advocate. I’m never a huge reader of magazines, but this one was really good. Good enough that I bought myself a year long subscriptions.
  8. Bourbon Barrel-Aged Hot Sauce: Spice up their culinary adventures with bourbon barrel-aged hot sauce. Made by aging hot sauce in bourbon barrels, these sauces develop a unique flavor profile that combines heat, tanginess, and a touch of bourbon-infused richness. It’s a perfect complement for their favorite meals and snacks.

I would recommend this as a stocking stuffer. Here is a bottle that’s not crazy priced – I haven’t had it personally, but I would be willing to try it.
  9. Bourbon Distillery Tour or Tasting Experience: For an unforgettable gift, treat them to a bourbon distillery tour or a guided tasting experience. Many distilleries offer tours where visitors can learn about the bourbon-making process, explore aging warehouses, and sample different expressions. It’s an immersive experience that allows them to deepen their appreciation for bourbon.

Out of all of the options presented, this is my favorite. I am a huge believer of purchasing experiences instead of just gifts. If you are looking for a great trip idea, you might want to consider this trip to some of the “off the beaten path” distilleries or a trip to Bardstown. If you want something a little different, but still awesome, you might want to head to downtown Indianapolis for this trip.
  10. Personalized Bourbon Barrel: For a truly unique and sentimental gift, consider gifting a personalized bourbon barrel. These mini barrels can be customized with their name, initials, or a special message. They can use the barrel to age their own spirits or simply display it as a cherished piece of bourbon memorabilia.

When my son was born, I purchased one of these for him. When I received it, I was impressed. I have a bottle of Maker’s Mark in it and I’m letting it age. I’ve been tasting it here and there and it’s getting really good. I’ll be pulling it soon and putting it back into the bottle and saving it until his 21st birthday.

Conclusion

When it comes to finding the perfect gift for bourbon lovers, the options are abundant and diverse. Whether it’s a bottle of their favorite bourbon, elegant glassware, or unique bourbon-infused treats, these thoughtful gifts will show your appreciation for their passion. From savoring the flavors of bourbon to enhancing their enjoyment of the spirit, these gifts will undoubtedly bring a smile to the face of any bourbon aficionado. Cheers to celebrating their love for bourbon with a memorable and well-chosen gift.

How Is Little Book Bourbon Different Than Booker’s Bourbon?

Little Book Bourbon and Booker’s Bourbon share a connection through their creator, Freddie Noe, who is the son of Booker Noe, the master distiller behind Booker’s bourbon. However, despite this familial tie, there are significant differences between the two bourbons in terms of their production, blending techniques, and flavor profiles.

  1. Blending Approach: Booker’s bourbon is known as a small-batch, uncut, and unfiltered bourbon, often referred to as “straight from the barrel.” It is produced by selecting barrels from different parts of the rickhouse that exhibit the desired characteristics. Booker’s is bottled at cask strength, meaning it is not diluted with water before bottling.

On the other hand, Little Book bourbon takes a different approach to blending. It is a carefully crafted blend of different aged bourbons, each selected for their unique flavor profiles and characteristics. The blending process involves combining these individual whiskeys to create a specific flavor profile and balance. Little Book releases typically have a lower proof compared to Booker’s, as they are often diluted with water to achieve the desired taste.

  1. Flavor Profiles: Booker’s bourbon is known for its robust and intense flavor profile, often showcasing strong notes of vanilla, caramel, oak, and spice. It delivers a rich and full-bodied experience with a higher alcohol content due to its cask strength nature. Booker’s releases are highly sought after by bourbon enthusiasts who appreciate bold and unadulterated flavors.

Little Book Bourbon, on the other hand, explores a wider range of flavor profiles with each release or “chapter.” Freddie Noe experiments with different blending techniques and whiskey styles, resulting in unique flavor combinations. The flavor profiles of Little Book bourbon can vary greatly, from complex and nuanced to bold and vibrant. It offers a more diverse range of tastes, catering to those who enjoy exploring different dimensions of bourbon flavors.

  1. Limited Edition Releases: While Booker’s bourbon is released in small batches throughout the year, Little Book bourbon takes the approach of limited edition releases, often referred to as “chapters.” Each chapter represents a distinct blend and narrative within the Little Book story. These limited releases provide an opportunity for bourbon enthusiasts to discover new and innovative expressions within the Little Book portfolio.

While both Booker’s bourbon and Little Book bourbon share a connection through their lineage, they offer distinct experiences. Booker’s is renowned for its uncut and unfiltered cask strength nature, delivering robust flavors, while Little Book focuses on the art of blending and exploring a wider range of flavor profiles. Whether you prefer the boldness of Booker’s or the creativity of Little Book, both bourbons offer something unique and captivating for whiskey enthusiasts.

What Are The Different Chapters Of Little Book Bourbon?

This isn’t a full list, but it gives you a good idea of the different directions each chapter goes. I would love to get a vertical of these, but I haven’t had luck finding them all. And I know more and more are coming.

It was a blend of four different whiskies, including bourbon, corn whiskey, and malt whiskey. This chapter aimed to provide a smooth and approachable sipping experience.
  2. Little Book Chapter 2: “Noe Simple Task” Released in 2018, this chapter showcased Freddie Noe’s blending skills by combining well-aged bourbon, corn whiskey, and malt whiskey. The focus of this release was to emphasize the bold and vibrant flavors of the components while maintaining a harmonious balance.
  3. Little Book Chapter 3: “The Road Home” Released in 2019, this chapter was inspired by Freddie Noe’s travels across Kentucky, visiting different distilleries and discovering unique barrels. It featured a blend of Kentucky Straight Bourbon, aged whiskey, and malt whiskey, offering a complex and flavorful journey.
  4. Little Book Chapter 4: “Lessons Honored” Released in 2020, this chapter paid homage to Freddie Noe’s late grandmother, who played a significant role in his life. It combined a mix of Kentucky Straight Bourbon, malt whiskey, and high-rye Kentucky Straight Bourbon, resulting in a balanced and layered whiskey.
  5. Little Book Chapter 5: “The Invitation” Released in 2021, this chapter aimed to celebrate the diversity of flavors found in American whiskey. It featured a blend of corn whiskey, rye whiskey, malt whiskey, and bourbon, showcasing a complex interplay of sweet, spicy, and savory notes.
  6. Little Book Chapter 6: “To The Finish,” is the sixth chapter in the Little Book Whiskey series. “To The Finish” offers a chance for any curious whiskey drinker to expand their palate – both seasoned connoisseurs and newcomers alike. The name of this year’s chapter offers fans of American whiskey an opportunity to experience liquid that Freddie Now personally had a hand in creating and showcases the innovation of Little Book chapters over the last six years.
