Preserving Perfection: How to Store Bourbon Properly

Bourbon, with its rich history and complex flavors, is a spirit cherished by enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. Whether you’re a seasoned bourbon aficionado or just beginning your journey into the world of whiskey, proper storage is essential to maintain its character and ensure a delightful sipping experience. In this blog post, we’ll explore the best practices for storing bourbon properly, from selecting the right location to protecting it from external factors that could alter its taste and aroma.

  1. Choose the Right Storage Location

The ideal location for storing bourbon is a cool, dark, and dry place. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or drastic temperature changes, as these can negatively affect the flavor and quality of the spirit. Consider storing bourbon bottles in a wine cellar, a dedicated liquor cabinet, or a dark pantry away from heat sources and windows.

  1. Stand Bottles Upright

Unlike wine, bourbon does not benefit from aging while in contact with the cork. In fact, storing bourbon bottles on their side can lead to cork deterioration and potential leakage, compromising the quality of the spirit. To preserve the integrity of the cork and prevent any potential spills, store bourbon bottles upright.

  1. Control Humidity Levels

Maintaining a consistent humidity level is crucial for proper bourbon storage. Excessively high humidity can lead to mold growth and label damage, while low humidity can cause evaporation and affect the spirit’s concentration. Aim for a relative humidity of around 60% to 70% for optimal bourbon preservation.

  1. Seal Bottles Tightly

After opening a bottle of bourbon, make sure to seal it tightly after each use to prevent excessive oxidation. Exposure to air can cause subtle changes in the spirit’s flavor profile over time, so minimizing contact with oxygen is essential to retain the original characteristics of the bourbon.

  1. Avoid Temperature Extremes

Bourbon is sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which can lead to expansion and contraction of the liquid inside the bottle. These temperature changes can create pressure imbalances, potentially pushing the cork out and allowing air to seep in. Try to maintain a consistent temperature range of 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F) for optimal storage conditions.

  1. Limit Bottle Movement

Store bourbon bottles in a place where they won’t be subject to frequent movement or vibrations. Shaking the bottles can disturb the sediments and affect the flavor, especially if the bourbon is unfiltered or contains natural sediment.

Conclusion

Properly storing bourbon is essential to preserving its original flavors and ensuring an enjoyable tasting experience. By selecting the right storage location, controlling humidity levels, sealing bottles tightly, and avoiding temperature extremes, you can savor the unique characteristics of your favorite bourbon for years to come. Treat your prized bourbon collection with care and respect, and it will reward you with a symphony of flavors that captivate the senses with each pour. Cheers to the art of bourbon storage and the delight of sipping this beloved spirit!

The Pitfalls of Selling Bourbon on the Secondary Market: A Cautionary Tale

Bourbon, the iconic American whiskey, has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years. As demand for rare and limited-edition bottles has soared, a thriving secondary market for bourbon has emerged. While selling bourbon on the secondary market might seem like an attractive proposition, it is essential for both sellers and buyers to be aware of the potential risks involved. In this blog post, we will explore the dangers associated with selling bourbon on the secondary market and the implications it may have on the industry and individual enthusiasts.

  1. Legal Implications

One of the most significant risks of selling bourbon on the secondary market is the potential legal consequences. The sale of alcohol is heavily regulated, and various laws govern the distribution and sale of spirits. Selling bourbon on the secondary market might violate federal, state, or local laws, leading to serious legal repercussions for both sellers and buyers.

In some jurisdictions, selling alcohol without proper licenses or permits can result in hefty fines, imprisonment, or the suspension of licenses for legitimate businesses. Therefore, individuals looking to sell bourbon on the secondary market must thoroughly research the applicable laws and regulations in their area before engaging in any transactions.

  1. Counterfeit Products

The secondary market for bourbon has attracted unscrupulous individuals seeking to profit from the high demand for rare bottles. Counterfeit bourbon has become a prevalent issue, with fake bottles being sold at exorbitant prices to unsuspecting buyers. These counterfeit products not only lead to financial losses for buyers but also damage the reputation of distilleries and the entire bourbon industry.

To mitigate the risk of falling victim to counterfeit products, buyers should exercise caution, do their due diligence, and purchase from reputable sellers with a verifiable track record.

  1. Price Speculation and Inflation

Selling bourbon on the secondary market has contributed to price speculation and inflation. As certain bottles become more desirable and difficult to obtain through traditional channels, their prices skyrocket on the secondary market. This phenomenon creates an artificial demand that can drive up prices for all bourbon consumers, including those who simply want to enjoy their favorite spirits without participating in the secondary market.

Moreover, price inflation may lead to a bubble in the bourbon market, causing a potential crash when demand subsides or when supply increases. This can result in significant financial losses for those who have invested heavily in bourbon bottles as commodities.

  1. Strained Relationships

The bourbon community is known for its camaraderie and shared passion for the spirit. However, the rise of the secondary market has strained relationships between enthusiasts and collectors. Limited releases that were once accessible to all enthusiasts are now increasingly difficult to find, leading to frustration and disappointment for many.

Additionally, some enthusiasts have reported instances of hoarding and reselling bottles solely for profit, which can be perceived as exploitative and detrimental to the spirit of community and shared enjoyment that bourbon enthusiasts once valued.

Conclusion

While the allure of selling bourbon on the secondary market may be tempting, it is essential to be aware of the risks involved. Legal issues, counterfeit products, price speculation, and strained relationships within the bourbon community are all potential consequences of engaging in secondary market transactions.

As the bourbon industry continues to evolve, it is crucial for all stakeholders to consider the long-term impact of their actions. Balancing the passion for bourbon with responsible consumption and trading practices can help preserve the integrity and enjoyment of this beloved American spirit for generations to come.

1st Prize – Buffalo Trace O.F.C. 1995 Vintage

Holy crap. If you are drawn first, you win this bottle that is valued at over $7,500. I’ve never even dreamed of owning a bottle like this, but I’m tossing a chance into drawing just to maybe be able to grab this bottle.

Since I have never tried this, I looked back on the Buffalo Trace website to find out a little more about this bottle:

The O.F.C. vintage-dated bourbons have a name derived from this National Historic Landmark’s original moniker — the O.F.C. Distillery — renowned for producing top class whiskey during its tenure.

Tasting notes for this bourbon describe cherry cordial on the nose followed by caramel and slightly smoked-oak. Dark chocolate, tobacco leaves and dates are found on the palate, followed by a lingering finish of leather, black pepper and cinnamon.

This is the fifth O.F.C Vintage release and, like its predecessors, will be very limited and extremely rare. Similar to previous releases, the 1995 Vintage will arrive in a wooden display box containing a provenance card. Inside the wooden box contains a crystal bottle with real copper lettering in-laid in the bottle with a hand-applied paper label. The label on the back of the bottle as well as the provenance card note the milestones for the year 1995.

When browsing through alcoholic beverage labels, you’ve likely come across the term “proof.” While it may seem like an arbitrary number, “proof” actually holds significant meaning in determining the alcohol content of spirits. In this blog post, we’ll explore what “proof” means, its historical origins, and how it relates to the alcohol content we find in our favorite drinks.

  1. Defining Proof:

In the context of alcohol, “proof” is a measure of the alcohol content expressed as a percentage of alcohol by volume (ABV). The term originated centuries ago as a way to assess the strength of alcoholic beverages. Today, it continues to be used, particularly in the United States, to indicate the alcohol content of spirits like whiskey, vodka, rum, and others.

  1. The Historical Origin of Proof:

The term “proof” has its origins in the days when alcohol content needed to be tested for tax purposes and to ensure quality. In England, during the 16th century, spirits were “proved” by soaking gunpowder with the alcohol and then setting it alight. If the gunpowder ignited, it was considered “proof” that the spirit contained enough alcohol and was not watered down.

The British used a scale where “100 proof” represented the point at which the alcohol content was sufficient to allow the gunpowder to ignite. This scale eventually evolved into the system used today, with “100 proof” equal to 50% ABV.

  1. The Relationship Between Proof and ABV:

The relationship between proof and ABV is straightforward. In the United States, proof is exactly twice the ABV percentage. For example, a spirit labeled as “80 proof” would have an ABV of 40%. In other words, dividing the proof by 2 gives you the ABV.

  1. Converting Proof to ABV and Vice Versa:

If you come across a spirit labeled with its proof but prefer to know the ABV, simply divide the proof by 2. Conversely, to find the proof of a spirit with a known ABV, multiply the ABV by 2.

  1. The Global Transition to ABV:

In the past, various countries had their own proof systems, each with different standards and scales. However, many nations have since transitioned to expressing alcohol content solely in ABV, which is more universally understood and consistent.

  1. Modern Use of Proof in the United States:

In the United States, the use of proof is still common, especially for spirits like whiskey and bourbon. However, many brands also include the ABV on their labels to provide clarity and accommodate international consumers.

Conclusion:

Understanding the concept of “proof” in alcohol content reveals its historical significance and its role in assessing the strength of spirits. While the term originated as a practical means of testing alcohol, it remains a familiar measurement for many spirits in the United States. As the global market continues to evolve, standardized expressions of alcohol content in ABV are becoming more prevalent. The next time you come across “proof” on a bottle, you’ll now have the knowledge to discern the alcohol content and appreciate the historical legacy of this important measurement in the world of spirits. Cheers!
