Welcome, cocktail enthusiasts and adventurous spirits! Today, we embark on a flavorful journey that takes the beloved Bourbon highball to new and exciting heights. If you’re a fan of the timeless combination of Bourbon whiskey and a sparkling mixer, get ready to embrace a delightful twist that will awaken your taste buds and leave you craving more.
Ok – That was a fun attempt at making fun of bloggers (myself included). This is a simple article about a slight twist I’m putting on my highball cocktails this summer. I promise it’s not earth shattering, but it is tasty.
The Classic Recipe
Here’s a recipe for a classic Bourbon highball:
Ingredients:
2 ounces (60 ml) Bourbon whiskey
4-6 ounces (120-180 ml) soda water or ginger ale
Ice cubes
Optional: Lemon or lime wedge for garnish
Instructions:
Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
Pour the Bourbon whiskey over the ice.
Slowly pour in the soda water or ginger ale, leaving some space at the top of the glass.
Gently stir the ingredients with a long spoon to mix them together.
If desired, squeeze a lemon or lime wedge over the drink and drop it into the glass as a garnish.
Serve immediately and enjoy your refreshing Bourbon highball!
My Twist On The Bourbon Highball
It’s my special ingredient.
I’m a huge fan of flavor that isn’t sweet, so I naturally thought a La Croix (or similar flavored water) would make a nice cocktail. My wife mixes it with vodka all the time, so it seemed logical to substitute it into a highball cocktail with some of my favorite bourbon.
So what’s my recipe?
It’s simple:
Ingredients:
2 ounces (or so) of decent bourbon (I recommend Old Forester 100 or Old Grand Dad 114)
1/2 of a can of La Croix (or other flavored water) – My personal favorites are Lemon and Berry
Yes, bourbon and root beer can be combined to create a tasty and refreshing beverage. The combination of bourbon’s rich and complex flavors with the sweet, herbal, and bubbly characteristics of root beer can make for an interesting and enjoyable drink. This cocktail is commonly referred to as a “Root Beer Bourbon Float” or a “Bourbon and Root Beer.”
Where Did The Mixing Of Bourbon and Root Beer Originate?
The exact origins of the root beer and bourbon cocktail are unclear, as the combination likely evolved through experimentation and personal preference. However, the concept of mixing spirits with non-alcoholic beverages is not uncommon in the world of cocktails.
The root beer and bourbon combination likely emerged due to the complementary flavors and the desire to create a unique and enjoyable beverage. Root beer, with its distinct herbal and sweet taste, pairs well with the rich, caramel, and sometimes spicy characteristics of bourbon. The carbonation in root beer adds a refreshing effervescence to the cocktail, enhancing the overall drinking experience.
Cocktail enthusiasts and bartenders have long been experimenting with different spirits and mixers to create interesting and innovative flavor combinations. The popularity of bourbon as a base spirit and the widespread availability of root beer likely contributed to the emergence of this particular cocktail. It has gained popularity as a fun and flavorful way to enjoy bourbon in a refreshing and approachable manner.
The Bourbon and Root Beer Cocktail
To make a Bourbon and Root Beer:
Choose your bourbon: Select a bourbon that you enjoy and feel would complement the flavors of the root beer. You can experiment with different types of bourbon, whether it’s a smoother, sweeter variety or a spicier, more robust one.
Gather your ingredients: You’ll need bourbon, root beer (regular or a specific brand of your choice), ice cubes, and optionally, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream as a garnish.
Mix the drink: Fill a glass with ice cubes. Pour a shot or two of bourbon over the ice. Top it off with chilled root beer, leaving some room at the top of the glass for garnishes.
Optional garnish: For an extra treat, you can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top. This addition creates a float-like experience and adds a creamy texture to the drink.
Stir and enjoy: Give the drink a gentle stir to combine the flavors. Sip and savor the unique blend of bourbon and root beer. The sweetness of the root beer complements the bourbon’s depth, creating a delightful balance of flavors.
Remember to adjust the proportions according to your taste preferences. Some people prefer a stronger bourbon presence, while others may enjoy a milder combination with more root beer. As always, please drink responsibly and be aware of your alcohol consumption.
What Is Root Beer Made Of?
Root beer is a carbonated soft drink that has a distinct flavor reminiscent of herbs and spices. It is typically made from a combination of ingredients including roots, barks, and spices. While there are variations in recipes and brands, here are some common components found in root beer production:
Sassafras: Traditionally, sassafras root was a key ingredient in root beer, providing a distinct and earthy flavor. However, it contains safrole, a compound that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has deemed as potentially carcinogenic, so commercial root beers now typically use artificial sassafras flavoring instead.
Wintergreen: Wintergreen leaves contribute a minty flavor to root beer. It is often used as a substitute for sassafras in modern recipes.
Licorice: The root of the licorice plant adds a sweet and slightly herbal taste to root beer. It enhances the overall flavor profile and can provide a subtle hint of anise-like notes.
Vanilla: Vanilla extract or vanilla bean is commonly used to add a creamy and smooth flavor to root beer. It helps round out the taste and provides a pleasant aroma.
Sarsaparilla: Sarsaparilla root, derived from a vine-like plant, is often included in root beer recipes. It contributes a distinct flavor with hints of vanilla and caramel.
Anise: Anise seeds or oil can be used to add a touch of licorice-like flavor and a slightly sweet aroma.
Cinnamon, Clove, and Nutmeg: These spices are often added to enhance the complexity of root beer’s flavor profile, adding warmth and depth.
Carbonated Water: Root beer is carbonated, giving it a bubbly and effervescent texture. Carbonation is typically achieved by adding carbonated water during the bottling or kegging process.
Sweeteners: Root beer can be sweetened using a variety of sweeteners such as cane sugar, corn syrup, or artificial sweeteners. The choice of sweetener varies among brands and recipes.
What Root Beer Works The Best With Bourbon?
There are numerous brands of root beer available on the market, each with its unique flavor profile and characteristics. Here are some popular and well-known root beer brands (personally – I’m a fan of Mug with my bourbon) that might be good for mixing.
A&W: A&W is a widely recognized brand known for its creamy and smooth root beer. It has a rich flavor with hints of vanilla and a classic root beer taste.
Barq’s: Barq’s root beer is known for its bold and distinctive flavor. It has a slightly more pronounced bite and a crisp finish compared to other root beers.
Mug: Mug Root Beer offers a creamy and mellow flavor profile. It is often described as having a good balance of sweetness and spices.
Dad’s: Dad’s Root Beer is known for its nostalgic appeal. It has a traditional root beer taste with a smooth and sweet flavor profile.
IBC: IBC Root Beer is often praised for its premium quality and artisanal approach. It has a rich and complex flavor, with hints of wintergreen and sassafras.
Virgil’s: Virgil’s Root Beer is crafted using a blend of natural ingredients, including herbs, spices, and cane sugar. It is known for its bold and authentic flavor.
Sprecher: Sprecher Root Beer is a craft root beer that emphasizes traditional brewing methods. It has a robust and smooth flavor with notes of anise and vanilla.
Boylan Bottling Co.: Boylan’s Root Beer is made with real cane sugar and natural flavors. It offers a classic and well-rounded root beer taste.
Hank’s Gourmet Beverages: Hank’s Root Beer is crafted using pure cane sugar and natural ingredients. It has a smooth and creamy flavor profile.
Sioux City: Sioux City Root Beer is often praised for its rich and bold taste. It features a blend of sarsaparilla, vanilla, and other spices.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the combination of bourbon and root beer offers a delightful and unique drinking experience. The robust flavors of bourbon and the herbal, sweet, and carbonated characteristics of root beer complement each other, creating a harmonious balance of tastes.
Root beer provides a flavorful backdrop for bourbon, allowing the whiskey’s complex notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice to shine through. The carbonation adds a refreshing effervescence, while the herbal and spiced elements of root beer enhance the depth of the bourbon’s flavor profile.
Whether you’re sipping a Root Beer Bourbon Float on a warm summer evening or enjoying a classic cocktail with a twist, the combination of bourbon and root beer invites you to explore a new realm of flavor. So, grab your favorite bourbon, select a quality root beer, and embark on a delightful journey of taste and enjoyment.
Remember to drink responsibly and savor each sip as you discover the perfect harmony between the world of bourbon and the effervescent charm of root beer. Cheers to the delightful fusion of two beloved beverages!

Bourbon, with its rich history and distinctive flavors, holds a special place in the hearts of whiskey connoisseurs. If you’re seeking the perfect gift for a bourbon lover in your life, look no further. In this blog post, we present a carefully curated list of 10 exceptional gift ideas that will bring joy to any bourbon enthusiast. From unique bourbon accessories to experiences that celebrate their passion, these gifts are sure to impress.
Top Gifts For Bourbon Lovers and Drinkers
Premium Bourbon Selection: This one is a no brainer, but still might be the hardest on the list for someone who doesn’t know bourbon. A standout gift for any bourbon lover is a bottle of premium bourbon. Choose a limited-edition release, a single barrel selection, or a highly regarded small-batch bourbon. Consider their preferences, such as their preferred flavor profile or distillery, to make the gift even more personalized.
If you don’t know what to grab, consider asking a local liquor store employee for some assistance. If there is a bourbon bar in town, it would also be a great spot to ask. Take the names of a few of the person’s favorite bottles and say: Could you give me something close to this, but better?
Whiskey Glasses and Decanter Set: Elevate their sipping experience with a sophisticated whiskey glasses and decanter set. Look for glasses with a tulip shape or crystal-clear designs that enhance the aroma and presentation of bourbon. A matching decanter adds a touch of elegance to their home bar.
I always thought something was cool, but nothing something I would buy myself. I have seen people online who are using these decanters to blend their own version of infinity bourbon. It’s kind of a really cool idea.
Bourbon Barrel-Aged Coffee: For those who appreciate the fusion of flavors, consider gifting bourbon barrel-aged coffee. These specialty coffees are aged in used bourbon barrels, imparting unique and delicious bourbon notes to the beans. It’s a delightful way to start the day with the essence of bourbon-infused coffee.
Coopers Cask Coffee is the brand I have had in the past and it was pretty dang good. I used my french press and made myself some very delicious coffee (that didn’t actually have bourbon in it).
Bourbon Tasting Set: Expand their palate and knowledge with a bourbon tasting set. These sets often feature small bottles or samples of various bourbon expressions, allowing them to explore different brands and flavor profiles. Some tasting sets also include tasting notes or a guide to enhance their tasting experience.
Instead of your traditional tasting set, I would recommend something like this: A Blind Tasting Kit with three different bottles of bourbon. The kit can be reused and it is actually something that is really interesting. Most bourbon lovers don’t do blind tastings and they learn a lot about their tastes and preferences when they do.
Bourbon Barrel Smoking Chips: For barbecue and grilling enthusiasts, bourbon barrel smoking chips make an excellent gift. These chips are made from reclaimed bourbon barrels and add a distinctive smoky and bourbon-infused flavor to grilled meats, vegetables, and even cocktails.
The one’s I have used can be found here. They smell like a mix of bourbon and oak, but they smoke up mostly like oak. I would recommend this gift as a stocking stuffer only.
Bourbon-Infused Gourmet Chocolates: Indulge their taste buds with bourbon-infused gourmet chocolates. Crafted using high-quality ingredients and infused with bourbon, these delectable treats offer a delightful combination of sweet and bourbon flavors. It’s a delicious way to satisfy their sweet tooth while paying homage to their favorite spirit.
Personally – I’m not a sweet fan, but I love these things. They are like my sweet indulgence and I rarely get them. So they make a perfect gift for someone as stingy as me.
Bourbon Books and Magazines: Expand their bourbon knowledge with captivating books or subscriptions to bourbon-focused magazines. From whiskey history and cocktail recipes to in-depth distillery profiles and tasting guides, these resources offer a wealth of information and entertainment for bourbon enthusiasts.
I went to park my car at the airport and dropped my wife off at the terminal. By the time I got to our gate, she had purchased me a copy of Whiskey Advocate. I’m never a huge reader of magazines, but this one was really good. Good enough that I bought myself a year long subscriptions.
Bourbon Barrel-Aged Hot Sauce: Spice up their culinary adventures with bourbon barrel-aged hot sauce. Made by aging hot sauce in bourbon barrels, these sauces develop a unique flavor profile that combines heat, tanginess, and a touch of bourbon-infused richness. It’s a perfect complement for their favorite meals and snacks.
Bourbon Distillery Tour or Tasting Experience: For an unforgettable gift, treat them to a bourbon distillery tour or a guided tasting experience. Many distilleries offer tours where visitors can learn about the bourbon-making process, explore aging warehouses, and sample different expressions. It’s an immersive experience that allows them to deepen their appreciation for bourbon.
Personalized Bourbon Barrel: For a truly unique and sentimental gift, consider gifting a personalized bourbon barrel. These mini barrels can be customized with their name, initials, or a special message. They can use the barrel to age their own spirits or simply display it as a cherished piece of bourbon memorabilia.
When my son was born, I purchased one of these for him. When I received it, I was impressed. I have a bottle of Maker’s Mark in it and I’m letting it age. I’ve been tasting it here and there and it’s getting really good. I’ll be pulling it soon and putting it back into the bottle and saving it until his 21st birthday.
Conclusion
When it comes to finding the perfect gift for bourbon lovers, the options are abundant and diverse. Whether it’s a bottle of their favorite bourbon, elegant glassware, or unique bourbon-infused treats, these thoughtful gifts will show your appreciation for their passion. From savoring the flavors of bourbon to enhancing their enjoyment of the spirit, these gifts will undoubtedly bring a smile to the face of any bourbon aficionado. Cheers to celebrating their love for bourbon with a memorable and well-chosen gift.

What New Riff Bourbons Can You Buy?
New Riff “Yellow Leaming” Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Yellow Leaming dates from 1824, when farmer Jacob Leaming began working with Native American corn in Hamilton County, Ohio. By the 1850’s, it had become one of the preeminent corns of the 19th century; it would go on to form the basis for the American agricultural history, and it came from right here in Hamilton County, Greater Cincinnati Ohio. Our Yellow Leaming was entirely sourced for us, and grown by, our wonderful farmer Charles Fogg of Greensburg, Indiana.
New Riff “Blue Clarage” Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Blue Clarage corn was developed in the 1920’s by farmer Edmund Clarridge in Clinton County, Ohio. An authentic blue Ohio corn, it lends a marked difference to the whiskey compared to our usual recipe, replete with fruited, spicy tones. The Blue Clarage corn, however, took a more circuitous route to our distillery; we were given 150 pounds of the Blue corn as seed stock from farmer Tony West at Appalachian Heirloom Plant Farm. Charles Fogg took this seed stock and grew it into a crop that sustained out singular production of this whiskey for years. Blue corn is often associated with tortilla chips, the Southwest and Mexico, but it comes from our homeland in the Ohio Valley, too.
New Riff Bottle Release FAQ
I can’t log in? First ensure you have the correct email for your whiskey club account? Often, we have customers using their work or personal email when their club account is through one or the other? You can also try resetting your password? Please note, if this will be your first Whiskey Club purchase, you will need to create an account. NRWC accounts are free, no obligation and can be canceled at any time.
I can’t schedule a pickup date? Due to the volume of sales our webstore may need a few moments to catch up to book your pickup date. Don’t worry, if you have an order confirmation you are all set and will receive an email or text with a link to schedule within a few hours. You will need an appointment to pick up your bottle.
I was not able to purchase, but saw someone online with more than one bottle. We’re sorry you missed the bottle. The good news is a limited amount of product will be available at select accounts throughout Kentucky this fall. Additionally, we do everything in our power to ensure bottle sales are limited to one bottle per purchase. Oftentimes customers will pick up bottles for family and friends and appear to have more than one.
A note on our whiskey club checkout during a release — what can happen when a whiskey sells out.
We have been overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm you, our dear whiskey club, have shown for our limited and rarer products. Thank you for all of your support! This Spring we will be releasing our 9th whiskey via our NRWC platform, and proudly creating another opportunity for all of us (we’re club members too!) to have a fair shot to enjoy these special whiskies.
Each year, we tweak and improve our system, often responding to direct feedback from you! One item we have heard recently is confusion around having an item in your cart that seems to “disappear” before you can complete checkout. When this happens, there are more customers with bottles in their shopping cart than actual inventory. Thus, when the bottle sells out, many of you feel you have lost the bottle. After much conversation and deliberation with our tech partners, we still feel the current system offers the best opportunity for first come first serve sales and means this phenomenon may still continue.
We hope you can understand if this happens that it is simply the outcome of a higher demand than supply. The good news is, with your support and interest our production has increased year over year and we will continue to have more and more products available.
The Fine Print
Club membership does not guarantee availability. Members will be given notice on the published timeline and will be limited per person. You will not be able to check out with more than 2 total bottles in your cart. Duplicate purchases by a single NRWC account will be canceled and refunded. If items are not picked up within 60 days, they will be automatically refunded, and your purchase will be forfeited. All communication regarding NRWC will be conducted via email, it is the responsibility of the member alone to keep their contact information up to date. NRWC members will be able to update their contact information through the website. Must be 21 years of age to purchase.
Want To Grab Some, But Can’t Make It To Kentucky?
Shoot me an email at chris@thebourbonmaster.com and we can make a deal. I might be running down to pick up my bottles and would be happy to grab orders that can’t be grabbed.
My father-in-law’s Opal went out about a month ago and I just set his new machine up yesterday. And he texted me this:
You have no idea what it is like to live without Opal. Thank you for helping.
Happy Father-In-Law
I have had my Opal Ice Maker for years and I am a huge fan. And I have found that the combo of a Yeti Cup and Opal Ice make the perfect combination for drinking bourbon.
Let me give you a little more of a background and some reasons why.
What Is The Opal Ice Maker?
The Opal Ice Maker is a popular countertop ice maker that gained significant attention for its ability to produce chewable “nugget” ice, similar to the type of ice found in restaurants and fast food chains. It was developed by a company called FirstBuild, which is a subsidiary of General Electric (GE).
The Opal Ice Maker became well-known for its sleek design and compact size, making it suitable for use in homes, offices, and small businesses. It is designed to produce ice quickly, typically generating a batch of ice in about 15 minutes. The ice production capacity of the Opal Ice Maker varies depending on the specific model, but it can typically produce around 24 pounds (11 kilograms) of ice per day.
One of the notable features of the Opal Ice Maker is its ability to produce chewable nugget ice. Nugget ice is soft and chewable, making it popular for various beverages and cocktails. It is also known by other names such as “Sonic ice” or “pellet ice.” The Opal Ice Maker’s ability to create this type of ice at home has made it particularly appealing to many consumers.
The Opal Ice Maker is designed to be easy to use. It has a simple control panel with intuitive buttons for adjusting settings and monitoring ice production. Some models also offer Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing users to control and monitor the ice maker remotely using a smartphone app.
To operate the Opal Ice Maker, you generally need to fill the water reservoir and let the machine do its work. It uses a process known as “nugget ice production,” where water is continually circulated over a chilled surface, gradually forming ice flakes that are then compacted into nugget-shaped ice.
Why Do People Love Nugget Ice?
People enjoy chewy nugget ice for several reasons:
Texture: Chewy nugget ice has a unique texture that sets it apart from other types of ice. It is soft and chewable, with a satisfying crunch that many people find enjoyable. The softness of the ice makes it easier to chew compared to harder ice cubes.
Cooling properties: Nugget ice has a relatively large surface area, which allows it to cool drinks quickly. The small ice pellets are also more likely to come into contact with the liquid, providing efficient cooling and keeping beverages cold for longer periods.
Enhanced beverage experience: The chewy texture and smaller ice pieces of nugget ice make it a popular choice for various beverages. It is commonly used in carbonated drinks, cocktails, smoothies, and iced coffees. The ice absorbs the flavors of the beverage, enhancing the overall taste and providing a pleasant mouthfeel.
Crushability: Nugget ice is easily crushable, allowing users to create crushed ice for blended drinks or to serve as a base for other recipes. The malleability of the ice makes it convenient for crushing or breaking into smaller pieces.
Overall, the popularity of chewy nugget ice stems from its unique texture, cooling properties, versatility, and ability to enhance the overall beverage experience. It has become associated with a certain level of quality and is often sought after by individuals who appreciate a particular type of ice in their drinks.
What Do The Experts Say About Opal Ice And Bourbon?
Chewable nugget ice, like the one produced by the Opal Ice Maker, has a softer texture and tends to melt relatively quickly. This means that it may dilute the bourbon more rapidly compared to larger ice cubes or spheres. If you prefer a slower dilution rate, you might want to consider larger ice cubes or spheres.
I like to drink higher ABV bourbon, so this dilution actually plays into my taste profile.
That being said, some bourbon enthusiasts enjoy the unique texture and quick chilling properties of chewable nugget ice in their bourbon. It’s a matter of personal taste and the experience you desire from your drink.
If you decide to use nugget ice from the Opal Ice Maker, keep in mind that it might melt faster than larger ice cubes. Adjust your pour and drinking pace accordingly to maintain the desired flavor balance as the ice melts.
Or use a Yeti Lowball and the ice stays for roughly 4-5 hours without much hassle.
Ultimately, whether the Opal Ice Maker’s nugget ice works well for bourbon is subjective and depends on individual preferences. It’s always a good idea to experiment and find the ice type and dilution rate that suits your personal taste and enjoyment of bourbon.
What Should You Look For In An Ice Maker?
When purchasing an ice maker, there are several factors to consider to ensure you choose the right one for your needs. Here are some key aspects to consider:
Ice Production Capacity: Determine how much ice you need on a daily basis. Consider factors such as the number of people or customers you’ll be serving and the frequency of use. Look for an ice maker that can meet your daily ice production requirements.
Ice Type and Size: Different ice makers produce different types and sizes of ice, such as cubes, nuggets, or flakes. Consider the type of ice that suits your preferences and the specific applications you have in mind, such as beverages, cocktails, or food displays.
Speed and Production Time: Assess the speed at which the ice maker can produce ice. Some machines can generate ice quickly, while others may take longer. Consider the turnaround time for each batch of ice and ensure it aligns with your needs.
Storage Capacity: Evaluate the ice storage capacity of the machine. It’s important to have sufficient storage space to keep the ice until you’re ready to use it. Consider how much ice you’ll need to store at any given time and ensure the ice maker can accommodate that amount.
Size and Space: Consider the physical dimensions of the ice maker and ensure it will fit in the intended location. Measure the available space to determine the appropriate size of the ice maker. Countertop models are typically smaller and more portable, while larger units may require dedicated floor space.
Installation and Maintenance: Review the installation requirements of the ice maker. Some models may require a water line connection, while others may be manually filled. Additionally, consider the maintenance needs, such as cleaning procedures and filter replacements, to ensure you can properly maintain the machine.
Energy Efficiency: Look for an ice maker that is energy efficient to help reduce operating costs and minimize environmental impact. Check for energy certifications or ratings to determine the efficiency of the machine.
Durability and Reliability: Research the reputation and reliability of the brand and model you are considering. Read customer reviews to gauge the durability and longevity of the ice maker. A reliable machine will require fewer repairs and have a longer lifespan.
Price and Budget: Set a budget for your ice maker purchase and consider the overall value provided by the machine. Compare prices, features, and customer reviews to find an ice maker that offers a good balance between cost and performance.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the marriage of bourbon and Opal ice is a match made in cocktail heaven. The rich, complex flavors of bourbon are beautifully complemented by the crisp, clean chill of Opal ice, creating a truly delightful drinking experience.
Bourbon, with its distinct caramel notes, hints of vanilla, and warm oak undertones, provides a solid foundation for a drink that exudes sophistication and depth. Its smooth and robust character is the perfect canvas for the unique qualities of Opal ice to shine through.

If you know anything about me, I love the city of Muncie, Indiana. I went to school at Ball State University, teach at Ball State, and I spend a lot of time at local establishments. So when I saw that people visiting this site had been searching for a list of the best bars in Muncie, Indiana, I couldn’t help myself. I want to share my knowledge of the area and want to help support some of my favorite places around. This isn’t specifically bourbon related, but I have to give the people what they want! Plus you can grab some bourbon at a few of the locations, so that’s a big plus.
So here is my list of the top 6 bars in Muncie, Indiana. The bars are in no particular order, but I encourage you to explore each of the places on the list.
Here we go!
1 – Best Overall Beer Selection – Heorot Pub and Draught House
This should be no surprise to any of you who have read by blog post about the my journey to 100 beers, but the Heorot is one of the best bars in the Muncie area.
It doesn’t look like much from the outside. And once you walk in, you will be met with dim lighting, a nice wooden bar, and a feeling like you went to a mix between a british and viking pub (not sure that’s a thing, but you’ll understand). You will then see all of the tap handles and the coolers with beer. You will take a look at the menu and be overwhelmed with options. And then you’ll ask Buff (or the bartender working) for a suggestion and they will give you the perfect beer.
You might even see me in there on a Friday enjoying their pizza special and drinking a wonderful craft beer.
This is the craft beer mecca and it’s where almost all of the other craft beer bars got their start. If you look at Savage’s, the owner Joel loved going to the Heorot before opening his own place. The guys that now own the Heorot started as customers, opened their own brewery, and then bought the Heorot. These are just a few of the great stories of how the Heorot has changed the face of the craft beer industry in Muncie.
Plus they have a nice little bourbon selection. So even if you aren’t a beer fan, you can still find a nice pour. And you never know when the guy will hop on the piano and play a few songs.
1.5 – Best Large Brewery – The Guardian Brewing Company
And since I highlighted the Heorot, I won’t put The Guardian Brewing Company on the list (even though they rock) because the guys who own the Heorot also own The Guardian Brewing Company. I want to spread the love. Hands down the best brewery in the area, but they only serve beer. wine, cider, and pizza. That being said, the pizzas are dang good and so are the cheese sticks. Stop in a pour of Charlie or Haze Stupid the next time you are in town.
2 – Best Bourbon Selection – Trust Your Butcher Steakhouse
Once you walk into Trust Your Butcher Steakhouse, you’ll see that you have landed at a great place to get a pour of bourbon. The list has a ton of different selections and they aren’t priced as high as you would find in Indianapolis (still high for the Muncie area though). If you set the price aside, you’ll find that you are in the best bourbon bar in Muncie. I don’t think there is a lot of competition, but it still makes Muncie no longer a bourbon desert.
Bourbon Master Blog Post
I still stand by my statement that this is the best bourbon bar in the Muncie area. The only one that was even close to this was The Neely House, but it’s no longer in business (and I miss their brunch so much).
3 – Best Ball State Bar – The Chug
Before I give my rundown of The Chug, I want to share an actual review from someone I found online. This is an actual review.
Ohhh how I love and miss The Chug! Two things are certain if you attend my Alma Mater, Ball State University in Muncie, IN; 1. You probably went to school with my brother, he was there for 9 years and B. You will get plastered at the dive of all dives, known simply as the Chug. You will not find a plethora of half naked sorority girls, fancy pants martinis, or any food (unless the popcorn machines working, which I don’t think it worked once in my 4 years at BSU). Ney, you will find cheap drink specials, SERIOUS drinkers, a glory hole up by the beer pong table, a sticky floor covered in who-knows-what, and a trough for peeing…if you make it to the bathroom (I had more than a few friends that didn’t make it). They have ski-ball, air hockey, pool, and above all else foosball and beer pong. No one is better than or above the Chug, but you will have a hard time getting your girlfriend there…if she does go, and she loves it as much as you do, then marry that woman for she is a keeper. It’s a tradition, a right of passage, you might get shot…it’s the CHUG!
Ben From Yelp
I don’t think I could have summed it up better. I think I might actually try to hire Ben for a job writing real reviews of bars.
The Chug makes this list because it is the last standing original bar in the Ball State Village. Brothers moved in and killed all that was good and holy about the Village (RIP Locker Room, Dill Street, Cleo’s, and everything that came before those places).
Is it a dirty dive bar where the floors are sticky? Yes. Is it an institution? Yes.
And that’s why it makes my list of the top bars in Muncie, Indiana.
4 – Best Food and Drinks – Savage’s Ale House
If I have to pick my one favorite out of this entire list, Savage’s Ale House would be my pick. As much as I love the Heorot, the Chug, the Guardian, etc, I will always be a Savage loyal.
I’ve celebrated here. I’ve started a business here. I have probably gained 10 pounds here. I’ve spent more money than I would like to admit here.
Savages is the perfect mix of a dive bar, a craft beer bar, and a great restaurant. They have a killer beer list (half rotating and half everyday beers). Their food is out of this world good. I recommend grabbing the Shedtown, the Muncie Burger, the loaded fries, or the Beer Battered Tenderloin (when it comes back on as a special).
I personally recommend the Shed Town (Chicken sandwich with bacon, jalapeños, and ranch) or the grilled cheese (sounds dumb, but it’s a ton of cheese with mozzarella sticks in the middle). If you are looking for a drink, great rotating taps, but the house favorite is the $1.50 PBRs and the Chuckberry. (21 and over).
5 – Best Small Brewery – Northern Tropics Brewery
As I mentioned, I am not putting The Guardian Brewing Company on the list because I highlighted the Heorot earlier. So that’s why this category is listed as the best small brewery. And the award goes to Ted and Northern Tropics!
If you head down to the south side of Muncie (past the Walmart and almost to the bypass), you will find this greenhouse called Northern Tropics. And at this greenhouse, there is a brewery. And it’s awesome!
It’s small, but it has some killer beer! The last time I went, there were over 15 beers on tap and I liked almost all of them. All brewed in house (literally on the other side of the room) and all packed with flavor. Ted (the brewer/owner) knows what he is doing and does it well.
If you haven’t stopped by yet, make sure to stop and grab a pint. You won’t be mad. And then grab some plants to take home.
6 – Best Spot For Local Craft Beer Lovers – The Fickle Peach
I was going to make this a list of the top 5 bars in Muncie, Indiana, but I couldn’t leave out a really awesome local establishment. The Fickle Peach is a great local bar in the downtown Muncie area and it is a great local hangout. They have a lot of different beers on tap and I have heard they are one of the top locations for Bell’s in the state (can’t verify, but it wouldn’t surprise me).
They have a massive menu of beers on the wall to the left when you walk in and then around the corner you will find pool tables, old school Golden Tee golf, and even a Skee Ball machine. They host a few different types of trivia each week (if I could get my wife to join, I would love to attend a few) and they are usually open for most major sporting events. I would suggest following them on Facebook for their most up-to-date offerings.
I call this a local establishment because that’s what you see there. A lot of locals. And that’s a great thing.
Final Thoughts
Even though I highlighted my top six bars in Muncie, I know there are a few that I left off the list. It’s not because they aren’t awesome, but I had to narrow down my list just a bit. So you might also want to stop by:
Vera Mae’s – For a great cocktail Elm Street Brewing – For some crazy beers (they are awesome in sours) Clubhouse @ Accutech – They just opened a brand new bar and it looks awesome – Plus the golf simulators Brothers – If you want to be swarmed with college students Tonne Winery – If you love wine, you will love this 1925 Pubhouse – Good beer and decent bourbon selection Mark III Taproom – I’ve never been, but I have heard it’s a great place
I’ll be honest, I am a huge fan of small dive bars or neighborhood bars, but I haven’t been to many on the south side of Muncie. And I think my opinions or recommendations for the Muncie area are skewed towards the downtown area. This is due to my college years and my love for craft beer. I cannot discount the bars on the south side of town (Buttonhole, Ro-Jacs, Lil Triangle, Red Dog, etc) because I really haven’t been to those bars. I have a feeling most of them have some great drink prices, amazing people, and a good time waiting for me, but I just need to make the stop.
If you find yourself in the Muncie, Indiana region and you are looking for a drink, make sure to check out one of the amazing establishments listed above. You won’t be mad and you will most likely be coming back after you realize there is more to Muncie than trains, Ball State, and David Letterman.
If you have been in any Bourbon Facebook groups or even a few of my posts, you have seen that people always have questions about shipping bourbon in the mail. I’ve even wondered about this a few times myself and I figured I would put together a quick post about the topic.
Important note: This is not legal advice and should not be taken as such. This information is from my research online and my own personal experiences. I’m not a lawyer, but I do enjoy a good glass of bourbon from time to time.
Can You Ship Bourbon In The Mail?
The real answer is it is NOT legal to ship bourbon in the mail unless you have a license to ship alcohol. And almost every consumer out there does not have a license to ship alcohol. Now businesses out there can legally ship alcohol as long as they follow state and carrier rules.
But we all know that you didn’t come to this blog post to hear the word no. You came to see if you “could” ship bourbon in the mail. And that is an entirely different question with a different answer.
The short answer to that question is:
It depends (as a former economics student, I had to slip this in here – It depends is the answer to almost every economics question out there).
It depends on a few different things:
Your shipping carrier
Your tolerance for risk
We’ll go into a little more detail about each of these, but those are the three main areas that determine if you can or cannot ship booze in the mail.
Shipping Carriers
United Postal Service
The United States Postal Service (USPS) prohibits the shipment of alcohol, including bourbon, through its services. This means that you cannot use USPS to ship bourbon to another person or to yourself. If you’re caught shipping alcohol through USPS, your package may be seized and you may face legal consequences.
So if you are going to ship bourbon, I would not ship it through USPS. There is no reason to test your fate with a federally backed shipping service. That’s just not bright.
FedEx and UPS
Private carriers such as FedEx and UPS do allow the shipment of alcohol, but there are some important rules and restrictions to keep in mind. And they aren’t friendly to individuals looking to ship bourbon.
For example, you must be at least 21 years old to ship or receive alcohol. Additionally, you must have a license to ship alcohol, and you must comply with all state and federal laws regarding the sale and shipment of alcohol.
So when you look at this, you can see that most people are not going to have the license to ship alcohol, but they do allow it. It’s limited to businesses.
Regardless of the shipping service, it’s not a great idea to be shipping bourbon. That’s where the next part comes in: Risk tolerance.
Risk Tolerance
If you have made it this far, you have probably decided that you might still want to give it a try.
And that means you have a different risk tolerance than other people.
But when it comes to doing something like shipping bourbon, here would be some things to think about:
Are you willing to deal with the consequences if you are caught?
Are you willing to lose the bourbon if the box is confiscated?
Can you be sure the package will make it from A to B without damage?
What happens if you never see that box again?
As you think through those questions, you are going to start to see your risk tolerance. And you’ll have your answer if you “can” ship bourbon or not.
You will find that most people who ship bourbon are shipping samples and they are using UPS or FedEx to make those shipments. It’s not legal, but it happens.
Side Note – States Also Have Rules
It’s also important to note that some states have their own laws and regulations regarding the shipment of alcohol. For example, some states prohibit the shipment of alcohol altogether, while others have restrictions on the amount of alcohol that can be shipped. If you’re unsure about the laws in your state, it’s a good idea to check with your state’s alcohol control board or regulatory agency.
But again – most of these laws and regulations are directly related to the business side. So you might be able to receive bourbon from a distillery in one state or a liquor store in another, but who knows about another state.
Conclusion
As much as I wanted to say it is legal to ship bourbon to other people, I can’t say that. It’s not legal to ship without the proper license.
I can’t stop you from shipping bourbon, but if you do, I would recommend using FedEx or UPS and shipping small amounts. If the package gets confiscated, you won’t be out a full bottle of bourbon and you won’t be messing with the federal shipping service USPS.
Again – This is not legal advice. Do your own research and make your own choices.
If you have ever taken a look at a bottle of bourbon, you might be slightly confused with some of the terminology that you see on the bottle. Phrases like single barrel, barrel proof, bottled-in-bond, and straight bourbon might seem like some fancy marketing jargon, but there is actually some meaning behind some of the terms that can give you a better understanding of the bourbon inside the bottle.
Take Straight Bourbon for instance. This isn’t just a clever marketing ploy. It’s actually terminology dictated by law to describe a bourbon that hits certain standards.
What Does Straight Bourbon Mean?
By law, it has some very specific attributes that set that bourbon apart from other bourbons or whiskeys on the shelf.
If you see a bottle with this phrase on it, you know a few things immediately:
The word bourbon means that we are talking about a liquor that is over 51% corn based that is made in the United States (note I didn’t say just Kentucky).
We know that the spirit had to also be aged in new charred oak barrels. The use of new barrels is a key requirement for bourbon whiskey, as it gives the spirit its distinct flavor and aroma.
But what makes a bourbon whiskey “straight”? To be considered straight bourbon whiskey, the spirit must meet four additional requirements.
1 – It needs to be distilled at no more than 80% ABV or 160 proof from the still. Distillers have the ability to determine this level and control it during the distillation process.
2 – It needs to rest in those lovely new charred oak barrels for a minimum of 2 years. There isn’t a limit on the length, but it has to be AT LEAST 2 years.
3 – It needs to bottled at no less than 40% ABV or 80 proof.
4 – It cannot contain any added colors, flavors, or other spirits
As long as a bourbon hits those three criteria, it can legally be named straight bourbon on its label.
Why Does This Matter?
Essentially, straight bourbon is a more specific category of bourbon that has stricter aging and bottling requirements. While all straight bourbon is bourbon, not all bourbon is straight bourbon.
This matters for a few different reasons:
1 – If you see “straight bourbon” you know that you are getting a product that has aged at least 2 years. Sometimes you don’t see an age labeled on a bottle, so this naming system can give you a little bit of a clue on the age.
2 – You know you aren’t going to get a bourbon that has “something” else in it. It’s just like the name says – It’s straight bourbon.
3 – You have an idea about the ABV range for the bourbon. If you take a bourbon much higher than 160 proof before entering the barrel, you are going to lose some of the taste that comes from the corn, rye, barley, or wheat. It’s going to end up tasting more like rubbing alcohol than the bourbon we know and love. You also know that it isn’t going to be a watered down bourbon once you pour it to drink. It’s going to be at least 40% ABV and it’s going to have that standard bourbon flavor.
Conclusion
If you see the words “straight bourbon” on a bottle at the liquor store, you are seeing a standard of quality on the bottle. Much like some of the other terms you see and hear in the bourbon world, it has a special meaning that gives a set of parameters the bourbon hits. To be considered straight bourbon, the spirit must also be distilled at no more than 80% ABV, aged in new barrels for at least 2 years, and bottled at no less than 40% ABV, and have no additional colors, booze, or additives. Whether enjoyed on its own or in a cocktail, straight bourbon whiskey is a beloved American tradition that continues to capture the hearts and palates of whiskey lovers around the world.
You have been invited to a party and you are going to take a bottle of bourbon for the host, but you have no idea what bottle of bourbon to take. Instead of just randomly walking into a liquor store and grabbing a bottle, use this guide to help you figure out what bottle to take. It’s nothing crazy in-depth, but it should get you on the right path pretty quickly.
Pick 1 – The Host’s Favorite
This should be a no-brainer, but if you know your host has a favorite bourbon, go grab a bottle of that. It shows that you put some thought into the selection and you know it’s going to be consumed. If you don’t know the host’s favorite, ask their family and friends. They might be able to give you a few ideas based upon their experiences.
Pick 2 – Your Favorite
When it doubt, take something you know you can drink and enjoy. Odds are, the host will open the bottle and share it with the people at the party. So if you know you like it, you know there is a chance others will like it as well.
If the host doesn’t open the bottle, then you know they’ll try it at a later date. Taking your favorite will leave them with a memory of you and you’ll get a call/text once the bottle is opened.
Pick 3 – A Solid Standby
If you don’t know what your host will like or if you aren’t a bourbon drinker yourself, you might not know what bottle to grab. That’s ok! Let’s go with a few old standbys:
Woodford Double Oaked
Old Forester 1910 or 1920
Maker’s 46
New Riff
Four Roses Single Barrel or Small Batch
Elijah Craig
Larceney
This list isn’t all inclusive, but it should get you a decent bottle at a decent price point. It all depends on what you want to spend and what’s available in your local area.
Pick 4 – Something Special
If you are looking for to really wow your host, then you might want to consider picking up something special. I like to define special in a few different ways:
Something that is hard to get – This would be a bottle of an allocated bourbon such as Eagle Rare, EH Taylor, Blantons, Bookers, etc. These are hard to find and usually sought after by bourbon drinkers.
Something that is unique – You’ve heard me say this again and again. I’m a huge fan of store picks. When you are looking for a cool bottle to take to a party, stop by your local liquor store and grab a store pick.
Something that means something to you – There will be some bottles in your life that you have a special connection to. It might be from an experience you shared with a friend, it might be from a distillery you loved when you visited Kentucky, or it might be something else that holds a special place in your heart. This is a great opportunity to share that experience with someone new.
Pick 5 – A Bottle From Your Collection That Isn’t Your Favorite
Have you ever gone into a liquor store and purchased a bottle of bourbon, get home, open it, and realize that you made a mistake.
Let your mistake be someone else’s opportunity to try a new bottle.
This might be a jerk move, but it’s a great way to get rid of a bottle of bourbon that isn’t your favorite. And who knows, they might 100% love the bottle. Each person has a different palate and what you dislike might be right up their alley.
Conclusion
I hope this guide gives you a few ideas on what bottle of bourbon to take to a party. I hope you have a great time and I hope your host enjoys the bottle you have selected. Remember, this guide is just a starting point and you can make your own choice when it comes to a bourbon to take.
